One World Against Dengue
June 15 is
World Dengue Day
Each year, about 400 million people worldwide are thought to have contracted dengue fever. In about 1 in 20 cases, people will develop severe dengue, which is a medical emergency. Fuelled by international travel, globalization and changing climates, there has been a 30-fold increase in global dengue incidence over the past 50 years as the highly adaptable mosquito which transmits dengue has become established in new regions. This progression and the threat to communities all over the world led the World Health Organization to list dengue as a top-10 global health threat already in 2019.
Worldwide, a collective of researchers, professionals, civil society and advocates is growing, with the clear goal of reducing the burden of dengue around the world by devising ambitious action plans and collaborations to contribute to the fight against dengue.
As dengue expands into both long‑affected regions and entirely new geographies, the need for coordinated, forward‑looking action has never been greater. A global threat needs a global day: on June 15, World Dengue Day aligns the world’s awareness, inspiring every day to act as One World Against Dengue.
From only 9 countries in the 1970s to now placing more than half the world at risk, dengue knows no borders - it is the world’s fastest-spreading mosquito-borne disease.
Dengue has quietly become one of the fastest‑spreading infectious diseases on the planet yet global awareness, investment and coordination still lag far behind its scale.
Global reach, local impact Dengue now affects over half the world’s population, with transmission expanding into new regions due to climate change, urbanisation, and travel. What was once a little known tropical disease is now a global threat reaching new regions around the world.
Fragmented response Efforts remain scattered across countries and institutions. A dedicated day creates a focal point for awareness and alignment, linking those who deliver healthcare, researchers, industry and communities around the world.
Science and preparedness It highlights the need for sustained investment in disease surveillance, prevention and cure, and that research findings reach policymakers and clinicians fast enough to inform real‑world decisions.
Public awareness and solidarity A global day amplifies voices from affected communities, drives media attention, and helps translate complex science into accessible messages that mobilise prevention and preparedness.
Momentum for collaboration June 15, born as ASEAN Dengue Day and now expanded into World Dengue Day, symbolises how the disease’s spread mirrors our need for global unity. It’s a moment to connect regions, disciplines, and partners in one shared movement.
Because dengue is spreading faster than our response.
